This post begins a newbie regular to the Taybian Design blog

Facade Fascination!

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by facades! The new, the old, the odd, the beautiful, the ugly, the falling apart; especially the falling apart! In this regular feature I will visually explore facades, in full, their detail, structure and of course texture.

This weeks facade is a local one in quite an affluent suburb in Brisbane, Australia. What strikes me as beautiful, its juxtaposition in such a suburb, yet this is still an operational business. Wouldn't you shop there?!?

My workroom of late...

The past few weeks have been SO hectic! I have been finalizing my designs for my next collection. Many a late night (hence the fuzziness of the images). These have been just some of my 'tools of trade' of late. Believe it or not, I am actually needing to invest in more 'tools', scissors and some much larger cutting implements (more about that later on). Like shoes (see previous post), bags (of course!), accessories and clothing, these 'tools' are as important 'investment' pieces!

ps. I CANNOT WAIT TO GIVE YOU A GLIMPSE INTO THE NEW COLLECTION. IT IS GOING TO BE GORGEOUS!!! A couple of months off yet, but WATCH THIS SPACE!

Tasmanian Timbers

Whilst I was in my homeland of Tasmania just recently, I decided to bring back my own little piece of Tasmania. This ruler is simply divine and has a little samples of all Tassies prominent gorgeous timbers:Tea Tree, Celery Top Pine, Eucalyptus, Blackwood, Sassafras, King Billy Pine, Huon Pine and Myrtle.

These rulers have been produced my two local brothers (from the Huon region) for many many years.

Let's hope for many years to come!

If you are heading to Tassie at any time, make sure to head down to the Salamanca precinct on the docks. I purchased this ruler (plus a GORGEOUS Blackwood chopping board) from the lovely Val Moehrke from Gallery 77 & the Ringrove Collection.

Yesterday I made an 'investment piece' purchase.

Note: I truly believe that these are a necessity

in life, love and business!

I was looking for a practical pair of summer shoes, I came across the most ridiculously gorgeous pair of peep toe high heels. I could not say no to these shoes. As with most women, I have one foot slightly smaller than the other. I debated and debated if the 'party feet' or heal grip would be enough. Then I listened to myself for just a second and realized that the longer I procrastinated, the more I would talk myself out of purchasing these amazing shoes.

So now with my purchase made, I could not be happier!!! They are gorgeous, sexy, comfortable and make me feel fantastic. Exactly what women (and men) want from an 'investment piece' purchase.

Not only this, it was bringing back all types of wonderful images from Italy. The decadently and immaculately dressed 'Italian Goddesses' walking down the ancient stone streets

of Rome, Florence, Venice or Milan. (sigh).

How amazing that one accessory can provoke

such feeling and emotion! :-)

I went for a night cycle tonight. Perfect weather and so gorgeously peaceful!

I then realized how clear a night it is, looked up and behold the natural beauty, and thought to myself... when was the last time I looked at the night sky? I can remember when I was younger always delighting in 'looking up'.

What a Weekend!!!

So one MASSIVE Market weekend down and another one to go.

This weekend just gone on Saturday I ventured to the Fantabulous BrisStyle Market @ St. Augustine's Church, Racecourse Road, Hamilton. I was next to the always beautiful Nicole from Hot Toffee (I am so disappointed with myself for not getting a shot of her fantastic display - so I borrowed one from her BLOG).

I didn't get much of a chance to have a good look around, as flying solo always presents this problem on market day, along with the temperamental gusts that we had on the day, our sandbags needed a little help holding everything down! I did have a the quick chance to have a look at Julia from {a creature strange} and Melanie from Kimonore Incarnate from whom I purchased a lovely handmade oragami card for my mother-in-law - she will love it!

I introduced some of my new purses and clutches...

...as well as some gorgeous wooden bracelets,

Taybian Design handmade Italian Dreaming photo card packs and the Leather Bookmark collection!

I love it when I meet gorgeous people and products at the markets!!!

On the Sunday I headed along to the Southbank Young Designers Market.

I was so fortunate to be next to the lovely Jo and Matt from Curly Jo Design. Not only is Jo's work AMAZING but these are two lovely lovely people.

Babes in Business Lunch @ Giani's Portside

Last Friday I attended the annual Babes in Business Lunch @ Giani's, Portside Wharf.

It was their 10th anniversary! Congrats!!!

So on my journey to Portside Wharf, I caught the City Cat and wandered past these old chaps dusting off their feathers, I think posing, in front of all dining in Bretts Wharf Restaurant.

Moments like these certainly put a smile on your face (a giggle or two) and spring in your step. What a great way to start my day!

Back to the lunch...

I was a newbie to the BiB annual lunch, but I am sure if I was a seasoned regular I would still have been blown away with the organization (event despite a table mix up in the beginning for our table!) and the imagination!

Gift shop, goodie shop (OMG how indulgent), glamour shots (can't wait to see the pics, so hilarious!!!), hair and make-up touch-up shop, all in a fabulous location, Gianni Events @ Portside Wharf, Hamilton.

I shared a table with some fabulous women (and man). In this pic (above), Danielle Crismani and Ruth Marshall from Stanwell and John Wells, all of whom I met at a previous BiB function.

I also met some new fabulous women at my table. Georgia Thornley and Nicky Lonergan from SV Partners also the gorgeous Claire Lousie, who designs beautiful bridal and formal wear (contact her on: clairelousiebridal@ymail.com).

I also attended the very first Boutique Markets Information Rendezvou. The girls' at Boutique, Kerry, Leasl and Rachel have been working tirelessly on not only supporting local designers/crafters/small business through their fabulous market (2nd Sun of every month @ Portiside Wharf), they support them in many other ways, such as this event!

The Information Rendezvou provided a fantastic forum for Serina Beirne fromAustralian Fashion Partners to present amazing insight into what makes up a successful small business in the world of fashion. I was lucky enough to have met Serina before at a previous function as well as in Melbourne at Fashion Exposed a few months along with her business partner Dominic Beirne. It was lovely to meet her again and listen and let her words of wisdom fly around my creative mind. A lot of food for thought! I look forward to working with them in 2010 to assist the Taybian label to grow.

Anyway, for now it's back to the sewing machine to get some more divine purses and clutches made...

ABCD last Thursday

Last Thursday night I headed over to Bar Alto @ the Powerhouse

for an ABCD (Artists | Bloggers | Creatives | Designers) catchup.

This fab event is organized by two fantstic gals,

Kim from Udessi and Steph from Bondville. Thanks!

Delight, delight, delight! GOODIIIIEEE BAG! This is where all the fabulous people that attend these catchups can showcase a little of who they are and what they do!

Some divine goddies inside... I could not wait...

Daneve from Chicuff, spreading some Christmas cheer with her candy cane and gorgeous brooch.

The gorgeous gals Ellie and Danielle from Selvedge House created this beautiful pouch,

filled with dried rose petals. I love love love everything about this,

the fabric, design, smell :-)))))))

The fabulous Teneale from Wicked Child Designs... What can I say??? Brilliant and ingenious! Teneale I love how your mind works!

Now I think Thea fom Thea & Sami was reading my mind, I was in the market for a new headband. I loved it so much I couldn't resist wearing it as soon as I pulled it out of the goodie bag!

The beautiful Alischa from Bespoke Letterpress Boutique has these beautiful, beautiful letterpress cards. I have seen them on her blog and website, and though the images are gorgeous and descriptive, noting compares to seeing the beautiful card in the flesh.

You must buy one/some for your loved ones this Christmas!

Last but certainly not least is this beautiful butterfly from Karla of Leonhard Pfeifer.

This divine and seemingly insignificant little butterfly is the member of a much larger project that karla undertook. To give you an idea of the project I will quote from the info provided with the butterfly...

Amazing! Karla told myself and Sandy of the amazing task of hand cutting four sections

(for each butterfly) and sewing them together.

My hat's off to you Karla. What beautiful work. I would have loved to have see the installation!

Thea & Sami studio visit

This weekend just gone I ventured to Thea & Sami's studio for an open day and have a look at how Thea creates her gorgeous textiles.

The lovely Teneale from Wicked Child Designs, Emma from Up in Annie's Room and Daneve from Chicuff.

Being in Thea's studio got me reminiscing about my days at uni. I was fortunate enough to go the the Tasmanian School of Art, arguably one of the worlds most beautiful art insititutes in the world! Set within an the old IXL Jam Factory, the building still retains much of the machinery from another day.

Sorry a little digression... So anyway I studied a double major of Photography and Painting. Watching Thea with her 'work clothes' on, the beautiful big work benches/spaces, the printing and washing down her screens made me want to come home get out a couple of canvasses and start making a mess. Dear friends,

Well Christmas is upon us! Can you believe it? It's mid Novmeber and we are all starting to realise that we haven't organised the accommodation for our Christmas getaways, or have not secured the venue for our work Christmas party (arhhh) AND realise that we have not ticked off all the people on our Christmas gift list.

I don't know if you are like me, but I always have every intention of making gifts for friends and family for Christmas (or any Birthday for that fact). When it comes to this time of the year, I realise with a little dissappointment in myself, that realistically I do not have enough time to make anything! I'm too busy palnning the accommodaiton or venue, as well as a million other things.

Way 2 work

Every Thursday I leave my beautiful office and production space at home and get some worldly perspective... working for someone else. I find that this help in the creative sense, but also in the running of my business, keeping me in check with reality AND giving me a break from my 'zone', which can only be GOOD!

I jump on my pushy (my beautiful orange Townie), cross the river on the ferry to Tenneriffe, drop into New Farm to get my NF fix, ride along the river on theRiverwalk towards the Botanical Gardens.

I have to say... what a way to start the day!

The Jacaranda trees look so stunning and seem to be lined along the river on my cycle 2 work! They remind us that it is not only exam time, but summer is just around the corner.

I love the little fishing boats making their way back up the river after an early morning fishing. The pelicans and other birds following behind helping themselves from the trawl nets that the boat trails behind. You could almost be in a little fishing village somewhere.

As many Brisbane residents would know, the city is somewhat slack with maintaining beautiful historical buildings and seems far too slow to give many buildings not only historical but cultural importance listings. This 'shell' that you see (well it is only the two outer walls braced), was what was left by the destruction of a development company. What was originally there was a gorgeous Art Deco building. New Farm has many, and only several blocks down-river the same happened again earlier this year (though only dirt is left and in defiance of many many locals signing a petition in opposition to the planning).

Both of these sites now lay dormant. Defying not only historical and cultural importance, but apparently the conditions of development imposed by the BCC.

One word... karma!

My two cents over now... on with the journey 2 work. I absolutely love the Story Bridge. Its design is beautiful and I love to look at it from its undercarriage, all the concrete and steel that makes it what it is. It is certainly not an environmental statement, but it certainly is a statement of Brisbane!

At the end of the day

Heading home, with the sun setting over the city is a peaceful way to end the day.

I love the motion of this shot (no it's not me stopping on the way home to have a few beers).

I am loving the beautiful produce at the moment. Though MY tomato plants are looking somewhat stunted, the tomatoes available elsewhere at the moment are gorgeous (and I am not talking about the mass gm mod produce from the supermarket!).

This is one of my favorites, simple, yummy and healthy dishes ever! Great tomatoes, Basil leaves and bocconcini, sprinkle with sea salt flakes, drizzle with olive oil (or extra virgin) and a little basalimico!

With cameras I have always been a Nikon girl (apart from my first camera the good ol' trusty Pentax K1000) and too with sewing machines I have always been a Janome girl (again apart from my first 'little girls' Singer sewing machine).

I find that from time to time I seem to have... lets say 'disagreements' with my beautiful (new) Janome, and she has her limitations. In times like these I revert to my (old) Janome. Though the ol' gal is a little louder (and on the nose a bit from being stored in my mums shed for a few years), I wonder why I ever bought a new one. I can rely on the ol' gal and she is a work-horse.

I have to say I love them both... equally of course (as you would two of your children). So with this I shall go back to my work table and finish up a four more Ocean Breeze Midi's. I will make sure to use both my 'babies' equally for each of their strengths!

Oh how I personify things!!

YOGA... Monday morning bliss

Better late than never... I have just recently started regular YOGA. It's not that I haven't done it before, it's just that I have never committed to doing it on a regular basis.

The Brisbane Yoga Studio is in Bulimba, with sessions run by Laya Fisher, who has taught yoga internationally for almost 10 years..

I jump on my pushy on a Monday morning, after a couple of intense hills arrive @ the Inner Harmony Centre in Bulimba. After the session take a detour leisurely cycle along the riverside to return home. I must say that this is a fantastic way to start the week!!!

We love living just around the corner from some amazing eateries. Oxford Street, Bulimba has so much to offer. It is alway vibrant and colourful. My husband and I indulged in a beautiful meal out last night.

We went to David's off Oxford. I had the Beef and my husband has the Blue Eye. OMG how delicious! Along with a bottle of gorgeous Shiraz, we certainly left feeling relaxed and satisfied.

It was long overdue our move into a bigger house.

Our move to Brisbane found us land in New Farm in a gorgeous 2 bed apartment. Very modern, handy and private. However with both my husband and I growing our businesses AND running them from home, we desperately needed more space. Esp. for me to have my very own space to create (and I suppose to have license to be messy - messy Melissa as christened by my nan) was imperative.

Hence our new 3 bed (yeah!) townhouse, with heaps of light, balconies, privacy but fantastic local in Bulimba we can now breathe.

As you can see I have made myself very comfortable, still getting things organised.

Will get there given time.
